The Rockbridge Historical Society welcomes local historian Dick Halseth to illustrate histories of Vesuvius, on the northern edge of Rockbridge County. His narrated slideshow will explore the area's early settlement and industrial growth in the early 1800s, the impact of the vital rail lines that ran through the town after the 1880s, and some of the community rhythms, and local curiosities, that have made this village a distinctive center for two centuries and counting.
Learn more about the 'Great Locomotive Chase' during the Civil War, and the 1956 Disney movie that commemorated that dramatic run. See some of the pioneering rail photography of O. Winston Link, including several striking shots of Vesuvius. And tip your hat to the iconic customer graffiti inside Gertie's Country Store and Restaurant ... or add to that history yourself, after the program!
Until then, you can browse RHS website for a range of related local histories, and zoom in on, or purchase historic Rockbridge maps featuring all of Rockbridge's historic corners, at rockbridgehistory.org/rockbridge-maps/
