My Heart Kept Dreaming is an exploration of the subconscious and a continuation of last year’s spring production, Rooted in What Remains. Centered on themes of time and cyclical experience, the two works form a complete loop, offering two perspectives on the same passage of time.

Moving beyond previous Appalachian influences, this year’s production broadens its cultural perspective. Artistic Coordinator Kathleen Gale partnered with students from Washington and Lee University to incorporate elements of African dance, and collaborated with Butoh artist Julia Vessey to integrate the avant-garde Japanese form often described as the “dance of darkness.” These collaborations expand the company’s movement language and introduce physical frameworks that support the work’s exploration of the subconscious.
