Fling for Fun: Disc Golf in Rockbridge

You've certainly heard of both frisbee and golf, but did you consider attempting a combination of the two?

Disc golf is said to date to the 1960s, but wasn't "formalized" until the 1970s. Truth be told, however, the phrase didn't really enter our local lexicon until probably the 2010s.

While Lexington, Buena Vista, and Rockbridge County may be relatively young on the scene, disc golf is taking off with three courses to choose from.

Thistle Ridge Disc Golf Course

Located at Natural Bridge State Park, Thistle Ridge is part nature trail, part disc golf course. The 18-hole course opened in 2023 and meanders two miles through forest and wildflower meadows, which are managed pollinator habitats. Thistle Ridge is also a Kids in Parks TRACK Trail, and features educational signage along the way. See how low you can score as you fling your way through the baskets.

The trail is considered moderate and the course is built for players of all skill levels.

Glen Maury Park

The nine-hole disc golf course at Glen Maury Park can be found around the upper loop at the Double Decker Pavilion before making its way into the woods. The course was designed by the Washington and Lee University Outing Club. The views are excellent!

Back Campus Disc Golf Course at Washington and Lee University

A challenging 18-hole disc golf course is laid out along 1.7 miles of the back campus of Washington and Lee University. Hilly, the terrain adds an extra challenge as you move from the Duchossois Tennis Center around Captain Dick Smith Baseball Field. Change up the way you play: look at the layout options to make a game plan before the game.
