Description

From the parking lot, look for the obvious trailhead and the paved hiking trail. The trail quickly ascends the 1.6 miles to the summit of Sharp Top Mountain (3,862 feet) and Buzzards Roost. With a fantastic panoramic view, this mountain was once thought to be the highest in Virginia.

Sharp Top Photo

Thomas Jefferson used a rock from the summit in the construction of the Washington Monument. A bus makes this trip to the summit even shorter if you’d like. Sharp Top is located in the Peaks of Otter Recreation Area, as are Flat Top Mountain and Abbott Lake. To view the plane crash site, return along the original path until you cross with Buzzard's Roost. From there, an unlabeled path is found on the left; this path will descend the southern side of the mountain for a quarter mile, and there you will find the engine, wings, and fuselage of the B-25 Bomber.

Insiders tips

For the best experience, avoid peak leaf season, when crowds can detract from the serenity of the trail. If you're up for an early start, catch the sunrise from the summit. If you’re interested in the region’s rich history, visit the Peaks of Otter Visitor Center, where you can learn more about the area’s past.
