Jorden's Point Park Trail

This is an easy hike around a small pond. It includes a great view of the Maury River and is a good hike for children. After the walk, the shelter is a great place for a quick lunch.

Description

From the parking area, turn right on Stono Road and cross the bridge. Walk to the overlook at the end of the road. Stop first at the overlook. The view of the river is great.

From the overlook, walk south following the Maury River downstream. The first is a couple of signs about how VMI eventually acquired the Chessie Trail. Continue straight to the bottom of the point. Here, there is another good view of the Maury River. Along the way, there are several interpretive signs. At the end of the point, there is a bend to the right. The path is now paved as it heads back upstream following the old mill race. It is on the left. Continue a short distance back to the road.

For a slightly longer hike, you can also walk around the athletic fields on the left side of the road. There is another easy walk to the river as well.

Driving Directions

Turn right onto East Washington Street and proceed two blocks to a stoplight. Turn right on West Main Street. Travel 0.8 miles and bear to the left onto Moses Mill Road. If you cross the bridge, you have gone too far. Proceed 150 and turn left onto Stono Road. Travel another 200 to a parking area on the right. There is a shelter and a restroom at the parking area.

Tips

  • The Miller's House museum is a walkable minute from the park's pavilion. If you are interested in local history, please take a look!
  • This park has great space for kayaking, soccer, bird watching, grilling, and fishing.

The primary trail surfaces include paved paths, packed gravel, and pea gravel. Surface type may vary depending on your location within the park. Photos will be provided for reference.

Trail Width: The trail generally ranges from 4 to 6 feet in width.

Slope & Grade: The main loop trail around Jordan’s Point Park is predominantly flat, with a slightly sloped entrance but otherwise easy access through the majority of the park.

  • Located near a wheelchair-accessible tennis court on the VMI side of the trail.

  • Pavilions and restroom facilities are wheelchair accessible.

  • A scenic overlook with pea gravel footing provides an excellent spot for birdwatching or enjoying views of the river.

Important Note – Woods Creek Trail Entrance

A quarter-mile section at the entrance/exit of the Woods Creek Trail, located within Jordan’s Point Park, consists of larger packed gravel and includes a steep slope.

This segment offers great opportunities for birdwatching but may become challenging after heavy rains when ruts form along the trail. Independent wheelchair users, particularly those using power or manual chairs, are advised to proceed only if confident in navigating steeper grades and rougher terrain.
