Chessie Trail History Hike with RHS
- Date
- August 09, 2026
- Time (Duration)
- 2:00pm (1h)
Event Description
** Join The Friends of the Chessie Trail, Rockbridge250, and the Rockbridge Historical Sunday on ** Sunday, August 9 (RHS' 87th Birthday!!)**
We'll depart at 2 PM from the "Pure Oil Parking Lot" (172 Old Buena Vista Road).
An informally social, and naturally beautiful, opportunity to join Rockbridge neighbors to explore local histories. And a chance to celebrate the value and evolving resource of our environmental assets during a short "Summertime Stroll" back through centuries of Rockbridge History.
We've been excited about the evident interest in our last 3 History Hikes along different stretches of the Appalachian Trail, building on its own Centennial Year, and helping us reach new audiences and programming partners, as we extend our Rockbridge250 programming.
This outing is accessibly flat: taking in the charms, and the shade, of the Chessie Trail along the Maury River. Along the way, we'll journey into some of the regional histories of trade, transportation, and traditions that have shaped this area, and several of the specific sites along that route.
RHS Executive Director and Rockbridge250 Co-Chair Eric Wilson will pause at a series of sites along the way to present particular stories, engage Q&A, and draw on the expertise of other local historians and preservationists.
After an hour's walk east on the trail, attendees can return at their own pace, stage their own parking shuttles in advance, or continue the Sunday stroll to the other trailhead at the put-in in Buena Vista, where the Route 60 bridge crosses the Maury.
