Maury River – Glasgow
The Maury River is a historical tributary to the James River that starts and ends entirely in Rockbridge County. The upper sections of the Maury River can become class IV and V during the Spring and other high water events. This draws whitewater enthusiast from all over the country.
This canoe and kayak trip is on the last 7 miles of the Maury as the river becomes calmer and eventually flows into the mighty James River at Glasgow.
Description
This trip is offered by Wilderness Canoe Company (WCC).
This river is much smaller and more shallow than the James River and does become too shallow to paddle during periods of low water. It also quickly becomes too high and fast to paddle after heavy rains. But, if you can find a window to paddle this stretch, it will be well worth it.
Beautiful mountain views, secluded islands and excellent small mouth bass fishing are abundant on this trip. Bring a picnic, stop on an island and relax.
