This is a legacy of the flooding that has occurred here in the past. To ride here is to ride along a bit of a history – the flood caused by hurricane Camille in 1969 wiped out much of the railway that existed at that time and permanently ended rail service to Lexington. The rail was reconstructed only as far as Buena Vista.
This is a beginner’s ride, with an easy grade up river. There are some rough spots in the pavement.
Many people fish for trout along South River, so at times there is frequent automobile traffic as the anglers look for spots to park and fish. Be alert while riding.
What will I see?
The sycamores are slowly recovering from the flood, and happen to be favorites nesting spots for orioles. Look for the unmistakable black and orange in early summer. And on quiet days you can often find blue herons along the river.
