XAVIER TAVERA: "On the Edge / En el Filo"
Art Exhibit: September 2– 27, 2019
Lecture & reception: Wednesday, September 18, 5:30pm
After moving from Mexico City to the United States, photographer Xavier Tavera came to understand what it felt like to be part of a subculture as someone with immigrant status. Subjected to this experience of alienation has led to his documentation of the spaces, places, events, people, cultural objects and artifacts of those who are marginalized. Tavera’s images offer insight into the diversity of numerous communities and give a voice to those who are often invisible. This exhibition focuses on the notion of borderlands as Tavera explores the echoes of cultural clashes at the United States/Mexican border through other Latina/o/x geographies. Tavera has shown his work extensively nationally and internationally including Germany, Scotland, Mexico, Chile, Uruguay and China. He lives and works in Minneapolis, Minnesota where he teaches at the University of Minnesota.
