Alison Hall’s intimate works are imbued with a ritualistic precision that bespeaks a creative process that is quietly intuitive rather than rigidly controlled. Viewed from a distance, her paintings may appear to be monochromatic—rich blues or blacks, but the works slowly reveal intricate patterns, optical forms, and labor intensive systems built with small graphite marks. Both formally and materially, she takes inspiration from thirteenth century Italian art and architecture with repetitive patterning rendered over layers of carefully sanded plaster grounds.
Hall has been the subject of exhibitions both nationally and internationally and is represented by Reynolds Gallery (Richmond, VA), TOTAH (NYC) and Galerie Gisela Clement (Germany). She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY with frequent sojourns to Europe.
