July in Lexington
Welcome to July and Summer in Lexington, Buena Vista, and Rockbridge County! You're invited to join us - at a distance, of course - for fireworks on Independence Day as well as other special events this month.
To see how we're doing our part locally to stop the spread of COVID-19, please see our PACT Pledge initiative. Area businesses are embracing CDC cleaning guidelines, as well as those specified by their specific industries.
Families usually flock to downtown Lexington for the annual Children's Bike Parade on Main Street, but this year's bike parade will look quite different. Rather than decorating bikes and wagons to parade together, Main Street Lexington has prepared take-and-make kits for your children to enjoy at home. Celebrate with a parade of your very own through your neighborhood and do share photos with the hashtag #LEXBikeParade to spread joy through the community. Pick up your supplies between noon and 5 p.m. July 3 or July 4 at The HUB, 314 S. Main Street.
We're excited to share that Independence Day Fireworks are a GO this year, and in a new venue, too! Glen Maury Park is hosting our area's fireworks display this year. The fireworks will be visible from a number of places throughout Buena Vista, but the park has plenty of space to spread out as well. The show will begin at 9:30 p.m. If you share your fireworks watch party photos socially, add the hashtag #BVfireworks for a chance to win one free night of camping at Glen Maury Park.
To round out a great holiday weekend, consider a narrated horse-drawn carriage tour of historic downtown Lexington with Lexington Carriage Company. There are also narrated walking tours of downtown with Haunting Tales: Lexington's Ghost Tour.
For animal encounters, consider Virginia Safari Park (new babies on board!!) and the Natural Bridge Zoo. Nearby you can beat the heat with a stop at Natural Bridge Caverns, or adventure through Dinosaur Kingdom II for some unusual sights.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
A favorite outing for families and couples is Hull's Drive-In, which is open and operating at an abbreviated capacity. Their July schedule includes great entertainment like Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire (July 2), Despicable Me and Shrek (July 3), The Jungle Book and The Force Awakens (July 4), and The Jungle Book & Deadpool (July 5). Monitor their Facebook page for more new titles throughout the month.
Full Moon Sound Bath is a special event offered by Boxerwood Nature Center and Woodland Gardens. Occurring July 5 from 7 to 8:15 p.m., the evening begins with stretching before the Tibetan Singing Bowls and other instruments create a wonderfully soothing, calming atmosphere. It may be just the reprieve you've been needing during this unusual time. Limited to 50 people and reservations are required. $20 per person.
Head to Great Valley Farm Brewery & Winery select Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays this month for live music and delicious bites by area food trucks. You'll love the craft beer at this Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail brewery and don't forget to have them stamp your passport.
The 22nd Annual Bank of Botetourt Beach Music Festival is on for July 25 from noon to 10 p.m. at Glen Maury Park! Normally a two-day event, this year's festival has been condensed into one day with The Entertainers, Blackwater, and Band of Oz sharing their best beach music for your socially distanced entertainment. Bring your chair! Hand sanitizer, hand washing stations, extra bathrooms, and even reservable 10x10 socially-distanced spaces for easy-up tents are available. Tickets are $25 per person and 10x10 tent spaces are $25 (reservation required).
July 11 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. is the 27th Annual Summer Breeze Wine Festival at Rockbridge Vineyard in Raphine. Plan to spread out; tents are welcome. Wine will be available by the glass and the bottle, and Jimmy O will perform from noon to 3 p.m. The festival's proceeds support a regional SPCA, meaning your glass of wine can feed, house, vaccinate, neuter, or spay a pet in need.
Plans are being finalized for downtown Lexington's Summer Restaurant Week and we'll post those details here as soon as we have them!
Monitor our calendar to learn of additional fantastic events happening this month in Lexington, Buena Vista, and Rockbridge County. And of course, all events are subject to change. Please check with each venue to confirm the event prior to travel.
